Our Name

Berean Baptist Church is located in the city of Charlottesville in the mountains of Virginia. We have taken our name from the biblical church in the city of Berea (now Verria), located in southwest Macedonia at the foot of Mt. Bermius, on a tributary of a major river. Paul and Silas' missionary journey there to preach the gospel led to the conversion of many reputable Greek women, and "not a few" men. In Acts chapter 17, the Bible says of the Bereans, "These were more noble . . . they received the Word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." We at Berean Baptist Church accept God's Word, the Bible, as our rule for faith and practice. Like the Bereans, we want to be people who study the scriptures carefully, allowing God to guide us through His Word in all truth.

Our Supreme Joy

We believe that we, as humans, are most satisfied and fulfilled when we have a relationship with God. Here's where to begin :

1. God's Purpose: Peace and Life
God loves you and wants you to experience peace and life - abundant and eternal! "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 (See also John 10:10, Romans 5:1)

2. The Problem: Our Separation
God gave us a will and a freedom of choice. We chose to disobey God and go our own willful way. This results in separation from God. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23; (Romans 6:23, Isaiah 59:2) People have tried in many ways to bridge this gap, but no bridge reaches God...except one.

3. God's Bridge: The Cross
Jesus died on the Cross and rose from the grave. He paid the penalty for our sin, bridging the gap. "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 (Peter 3:18, I Timothy 2:5)

4. Our Response: Receive Christ
God has provided the only way. Each person must make a choice to receive Jesus Christ or reject Him. "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9 (John 1:12, Romans 10:13, Revelation 3:20)

The journey of life can seem like mountainous terrain, with peaks, valleys, precipices, and hard climbing. The Psalmist wrote, "His delight is in the law of the Lord; . . . And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatever he does shall prosper." (Psalm 1:2-3)

Our Mission

"To bring people to Jesus and membership in His family, develop them to Christ-like maturity, and equip them for their ministry in the church and mission in the world, in order to magnify God's name."

Our Pastor Bruce Moulton is the senior pastor of Berean Baptist Church. Bruce has recently joined us (1/08) as senior pastor and we are thrilled about how God will use him to grow this congregation. Bruce has a distinguished military background, currently being retired from the US Army. Bruce has a passion for evangelism and is often found sharing Christ with strangers on the street, merchants, and anyone he comes into contact with. He and his wife, Teresa, have two children: Shayna and Breanna. Pastor Bruce has two Bachelor's of Science degrees, one from the University of Maryland College Park and one from Liberty University. Bruce also has a Master's of Arts degree and a Master's of Divinity degree from Liberty University.
